Fillings can be used to restore teeth that have become damaged as a result of decay.

When left untreated, decay will eat away at the healthy enamel of the tooth or teeth causing cavities/caries to form in the tooth and leaving the tooth more vulnerable to further infection. With fillings, we can restore the tooth in question, leaving it healthy and protected from any further decay or damage.

FAQs

What are fillings made of?
Fillings are normally made of either a metal amalgam material or a composite material. Both materials are durable and long-lasting and can protect the tooth from further damage. Composite fillings – also known as white fillings, are the more aesthetically pleasing option as they blend in more naturally with the rest of the smile and can be shade-matched to your teeth.

How do I know if I need a filling?
A cavity, also known as caries, often causes an increase in sensitivity for the patient, so this could be an indicator that you need a filling. If you are visiting us regularly here, and have frequent check-ups, then our dentists may spot your need for a filling before you even experience any sensitivity or symptoms.

What happens during the filling treatment?
This is a fairly simple treatment and is often completed during just one appointment. First, we’ll clean the affected tooth, removing the damaged enamel before placing the filling material in the cavity – this process will differ according to whether you are having an amalgam or composite filling placed.

I’m unhappy with my amalgam fillings, can I replace them?
We will first have to undertake a consultation to make sure this is a viable option, but in many cases, we can replace amalgam fillings with white composite fillings if the patient is unhappy with their original filling.
