A crown is designed to fit over the top of a natural tooth, repairing and restoring any damage done to the cusp of the tooth and sitting over it like a kind of cap. They strengthen and protect the tooth from further damage and can help prevent any further decay from occurring.
Why do I need a crown?
Crowns are used to restore teeth that have become damaged in some way. This is often a result of tooth decay, but can also be caused by general wear and tear, or an injury. They are also often used in conjunction with another restorative treatment, such as after a root canal treatment, or in placing a dental bridge.
What are crowns made of?
Traditionally, crowns were made of a precious metal such as gold, but modern techniques and materials mean we can now use materials that are just as durable but much more natural looking. Now, most of the crowns we place are made from porcelain which has an extremely natural-looking finish and can fit in practically seamlessly with the rest of the mouth.
How long is the treatment?
Crowns are usually placed over two appointments.
What happens during the treatment?
At the first appointment, we’ll remove the decayed and weakened parts of the tooth before preparing the tooth and taking a digital scan or impression. This will be used to make your crown off-site, and we’ll fit you for a temporary crown that you can wear in the meantime. Once your crown has been made, you’ll come back to the practice and we’ll fit it and cement it into place for you.
